Arsht Beacon Award Honors Frightland Volunteer
Richard Piendak
Cancer Care Connection presented the 2004 Honorable
Roxana C. Arsht Beacon Award to four volunteer creators
of Frightland, Nick Ferrara, Phillip Miller, George
Long and Richard Piendak in a ceremony
at the A. I. duPont Hospital for Children. Eric Cannon,
Judge Roxana C. Arsht’s nephew and Cancer Care Connection
(CCC) officials made the presentation at a ceremony
videotaped for viewing by hundreds of participants
at the Light the Night Event later that evening.
The Delaware Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS)
nominated the men for their volunteer time and dedication
in creating and operating Frightland, an annual 15-day
event of Halloween fun. A “haunted “ attraction located
off of Route 13 in Middletown, Frightland has raised
more than $150,000 over five years to support Leukemia
and Lymphoma Society programs in Delaware. Attended
by thousands of individuals, the fundraiser also informs
the public about leukemia and lymphoma. The 2004 Frightland
opened Oct. 1 runs on weekends through Oct. 31.
Paula Breen, Executive Director of Cancer Care Connection,
said the award recognizes individuals and groups distinguished
by vision, action and generosity to improve the lives
of people affected by cancer.
